The small center of Moggiona stands on a rocky outcrop in the middle of a closed valley, at an altitude of 700 meters. The origins of Moggiona are the same of other pre-Roman villages, characterized by an inhabited nucleus placed on a hill and located along the main communication routes in defense of mountain pastures. There are the remains of one of these village, called “Il Poggio”, a few kilometers from Moggiona along an ancient road that leads from Pratovecchio to the Apennine ridge. Another ancient way of communication goes up from a valley along the Sova torrent, which comes from the foot of the village. The history of Moggiona is closely linked to Camaldoli one since 1012, when the monk Romualdo founded, a few kilometers from this small village, the Hermitage of Camaldoli.
